Curtains: Measure Width, Drop and Heading Before You Order
Curtains need to fit the hanging system as well as the window. Decide where the fabric starts and ends before comparing patterns, then check exactly how much fabric comes in the selected pack.
Start at the hanging point
Measure from the intended rod or track position to where you want the curtain to finish. IKEA’s measuring guidance also emphasises the mounting position and the surrounding furniture. Account for window opening, furniture below and the space in which curtains gather when open. The glass dimensions alone do not describe the area your curtains need to cover.
Separate panel width from total coverage
Check whether the listed width is for one panel or the full pair. Add up the fabric width you are actually buying and compare it with the hanging span and the fullness you want. Follow the curtain maker’s guidance for that heading style instead of applying one multiplier to every product. A photograph showing deep folds may use more panels than the selected pack contains.
Match the heading to your hardware
Eyelets need a compatible rod diameter. Other headings may need hooks, rings or a particular track arrangement. Check whether those parts are supplied or purchased separately. For ready-made curtains, confirm whether the stated drop includes the heading and how it is measured. A small difference at the top can change where the hem falls.
Read light-control and care claims
Compare the manufacturer’s descriptions of sheer, light-filtering and blackout designs rather than inferring performance from colour alone. Think about gaps at the sides and above the curtain when planning the installation. Check care instructions and whether the panel length can be adjusted in the intended way. On Amazon India, confirm panel count, exact dimensions and included fittings for the selected variant before checking delivery and returns.
